Tuesday January 7 JOIN A WRITING COMMUNITY Author Gwynne Hunt’s drop-in writing group encourages spoken word, poetry, performance art, monologues and more. Group will meet the first and third Tuesday of the month starting Jan. 7, 2025, 6:45 p.m. in the upstairs lounge at the Capitol Theatre. Doors lock at 7 p.m. Free admission.

Wednesday January 1 INAUGURAL JOHN DOUGLAS MEMORIAL POLAR BEAR SWIM at John Douglas Park at tiipis (formerly known as Canal Beach). Registration opens at noon and the race for the water will start at 1 p.m.

Tuesday December 31 FREE NEW YEAR’S EVE ACTIVITIES at the Alberni Valley Museum (10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.), the Alberni Valley Multiplex (3:30 to 5:30 p.m.), the Echo Pool (5:30 to 7:30 p.m.) and the Glenwood Centre (6 to 9:30 p.m.). Balloon drop will take place at the Glenwood Centre at 9 p.m. courtesy of the Port Alberni Toy Run.
